NECC: It’s Not Your Daughter’s Internet: Internet2 & Learners
Internet2 was ‘born’ in 1996 and has as it’s mission to, “develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet.” Internet2 provides unprecedented download speeds. It is a collaboration between K12 schools, community colleges, four year colleges, public libraries, museums and zoos.
Some examples of Internet2 use include: Manipulation of remote instrumentation (such as expensive microscopes housed at universities), college lecture presentations, virtual reading programs and language/cultural exchange programs. Many Internet2 programs are available over standard IP and ISDN videoconferencing, but with much greater quality and speed when using Internet 2.
K20 Internet2 Initiative is a place schools can go to learn about projects available on Internet2.
Megaconference Jr. used Internet 2. Do we have any plans to use Internet 2 for other projects? Can we look at the list and offer project ideas to teachers? Is there a procedure in place?
