Megaconference Jr. 2005

Today our school is participating in a worldwide videoconferencing event called Megaconference Jr. 2005. It is really one huge videoconference with 193 schools registered to participate. The conference started at 7 AM and continues until 7 PM. So far it is early, but we’ve seen a presentation on Internet 2, Indian dancing and historical reenactments. At this moment, they are doing a roll call of all the participating schools. The content of the presentations is a bit limited, but the sense of connecting to people around the world is pretty incredible.

Our school is doing a presentation at 3:30 PM focusing on computer science and gender - getting girls more involved in technology fields. Hopefully there will not be any technical difficulties. We have had a hard time the past few days doing our test session with the Megaconference people. You can access the conference presentations as well as a video archive on the Megaconferenc Jr. website.

UPDATE: The computer science presentation was a semi-bust. At first they couldn’t hear our audio, so we got bumped. They came back to us, the kids did the presentation, but there were NO questions. I am wondering if in fact the audio came through? I think the idea is pretty cool, but it didn’t seem to work as planned. I hope the district doesn’t put the kibosh on this just because certain things didn’t work properly.
