Is there something missing here?

Although I briefly mentioned this in a previous post, I am curious what others are experiencing. So if you read this, please comment! Here is what I am thinking. Isn’t there a real deficit among teachers in the area of intellectual curiosity . I believe there are a lot of teachers out there in our classrooms that claim to model life-long learning, but in actuality, do not. Too many do not know why they teach what they teach, do not know how to ask or answer the big questions about their content area, and do not model professional growth in their career - in fact, I’d say most view teaching as a job with some nifty perks, rather than a career.

It’s not only present at the instructional level, it seems to be present at every level of our educational system, from top to bottom. Is this a major factor keeping us from bringing about real change? Why are real thinkers not prevalent in our profession? What can we do about this? Thoughts?
