2007 FY Education Budget Increased by 25%!
No....that really hasn’t happened. But David Warlick proposes the idea and asks us the question...Why should President Bush be calling on congress to increase education funding by 25 percent?
I don’t have ten reasons (that will take some more time), but the first thing that comes to mind is that it would send a message to our citizenry - a message that we are serious about education and addressing real problems rather than just symptoms. Such a huge increase would get the public’s attention. An increase in funding would demonstrate leadership on the part of the president and congress. There would be dialogue, discussion and debate about the greater problems with education instead of only the symptoms (such as insufficent test scores, as an example). Americans would begin to see how a strong education system can impact many other issues that plague our country. Right now, we have no great national leaders in education - therefore no significant national debate. If America was to be figuratively slapped in the face with a shift created by such a large, unprecedented increase, we might actually begin to see some movement in the proper direction. Then again, this is the federal government, and movement seems not to come easy…
